3/19/2024 0 Comments Lutherans hail mary hymn![]() After Luke’s introduction, we have the Angel’s visit to Zechariah and the birth of John foretold. We’re probably all a least a little familiar with the story of Luke 1. So let’s take a closer look at our Gospel lesson for today. I think that we can learn from Elizabeth in today’s Gospel lesson a good and beneficial way of thinking about Mary, the mother of our Lord. So what do we do with Mary? We obviously don’t pray to her or treat her as an equal to her son. The Angel Gabriel and Elizabeth both tell her so, which is no lie. She carries Jesus in her womb no other woman will ever have that privilege. ![]() Yet, she is the mother of God or θεοτοκος in the Greek if you’d rather. Mary is not the co-redemptrix she was not conceived without sin, prayers should not be directed to her or any of the saints, and she does not intercede for us. Yes, the Roman church has elevated Mary far beyond where she should be. ![]() Modern Lutherans have a problem with Mary.
